Thousands of people throughout the world build themselves a new website every single day. WordPress is one of the world’s most popular website building platforms, and it comes with powerful design tools and features to streamline the creation process.
However, WordPress web design can still be difficult, especially if you don’t have a lot of experience in the field. With this in mind, I decided to put together a short list of the most important things to think about when you’re designing a new WordPress website. They include:
Choose Your Theme Carefully
One of the best things about WordPress is that it allows you to base your website on an existing theme or template. The WordPress template library contains thousands of different designs, while you can also explore third party libraries if you would like.
Now, it’s important to think very carefully about the type of theme you want you use and how it’s going to work. If you choose the right design template at the start, you will find yourself saving a lot of time and effort down the track.
Search Engine Optimisation
If you know anything about the world of websites and online marketing, you would have heard of search engine optimisation, or SEO. Now, it’s important to understand just how crucial SEO is when it comes to designing your website
Although a lot of people focus on things like content creation and keyword implementation to improve their SEO score, you need to realise that your design will impact it as well. Make sure that your site load speeds are as low as possible, that your design is engaging and interesting, and that you’re optimising the user experience as much as you can.
Similarly, you need to make sure that your website is secure from day one. Online hacking is becoming more and more widespread, with some sources suggesting that over thirty thousand websites are hacked every day.
With this in mind, I’d recommend installing some sort of website security plugin or app to help keep your site secure. Make sure that you also keep security in mind when you’re designing things like signup forms or online store checkouts.
Finally, it’s extremely important to make sure that your WordPress website is consistent throughout. Use the same design features on every page, and make sure that people aren’t going to get confused when they start browsing your site.
Similarly, I’d recommend staying as consistent as possible across your different social media profiles and other online presences. Use the same logo, colour scheme, and font pairings as much as possible. Doing so will help you develop a strong, consistent online presence.
WordPress is one of the world’s most popular website management platforms, but it can be a little complicated to use at first. When you’re designing your first WordPress website, you need to keep a wide range of things at the front of your mind to prevent mistakes.
I’ve outlined some of the most important things to think about in this article, but as always, make sure that you do your own research and understand what you’re doing before you jump into the design process.
